Recently, we decided to investigate headsets that were compatible with Polycom Soundpoint IP phones (SIP). Polycom is kind enough to publish a known tested and certified list. As new models keep coming out though, the list is sorely out of date. One of the things we were trying NOT to do was use bluetooth headset. So we settled on a DECT 6.0 headset. After researching, we found that JABRA makes a wireless DECT headset that connects to BOTH the PC and phone simultaneously.Plantronics makes an excellent headset that connects to the phone only, but in our case we wanted a dual purpose headset and found this was about the same cost as the Plantronics with some extra functionality for the PC. After reading up on it, we found there are different ordering items in relation to that headset. There was a mechanical lifter option (yuck), and there was also a EHS (Electronic Hook Switch) for Polycom phones (hooray!). So after ordering the headset without the mechanical lfter and the separate EHS, we also made changes to our phone profile. In sipXconfig , choose the phone, then User Preferences, and check the following:
After making these changes, push the profile to the phone. After it reboots, got to the phone MENU button, then press "3, 1, 1, 3, 2". Select "JABRA MODE". The Polycom has a "serial" port on the bottom of it. This port allows the EHS to connect to the bottom of the phone, and the other end goes into the base charging unit of the headset (AUX port). Another cable goes from the headset port on the bottom of the phone to the telephone (not handset) outlet on the base station. With the slide switch in the "A" position on the base station, the DHGS option has to be selected on the LCD display of the base station. The headset has several headband styles, and you can chose the one most comportable for you, The audio is excellent and you can easily roam much farther than with a bluetooth unit. In our case 100' was alll we would need. You get a quiet audible ring tone when calls come in, can answer and hangup calls wirelessly. Mute and volume up/down is also done wirelessly at the headset. We tested on a Soundpoint 650 with firmware 4.1 (works on 4.0 and up) and firmware 3.03b (works on 3.0 and up). A bit pricey, but so very useful since you can use it for both PC and phone, especially if you spend a lot of time on the phone. The headset is close to 200.00 (US). http://www.pricescan.com/item.asp?category=misc&itemno=1536968 The EHS unit is around 40.00 (US). http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/cell-phone-headsets/m/81200954/search=1420117/st=query/ |
